Katie and John’s Wedding at the Peaks Island Lions Club in Portland, Maine
12 Dec 2023, Posted by Wedding Photography inPlease join us in congratulating Katie and John! They were married on a lovely September afternoon at Greenwood Garden, also known as the Peaks Island Lions Club. It was such a fun day filled with family and friends, and capped off with great food and live music.
This wedding was particularly special for us, as we’ve known Katie and her family for a long time. Katie’s mother, Jean, actually married us many moons ago, and we’ve photographed weddings for two of Katie’s cousins, Cassie and Angus. It was such an honor to photograph Katie and John’s big day, too, and it was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces!
Although Katie and John both grew up in the small city of Bangor, Maine, they didn’t really meet until Katie temporarily moved back to Maine from New York during COVID. They hung out a couple times at get-togethers with mutual friends and found they had a connection, but it didn’t go anywhere initially because Katie was still tied to New York. Eventually, Katie came back to Maine permanently and settled in Portland, near John. It didn’t take long for the two of them to spark a romance at that point, and they soon became best friends and more.
John proposed during a trip to Barcelona, near the beach in Barceloneta. Toward the end of what was an amazing day full of sun and swimming, Katie and John took the cable car up to Parc Montjunc and found a cozy little bar – Terraza Miramar – that had panoramic views of Barcelona. The bar was about to close, and so Katie and John had the spot all to themselves. John took that opportunity to pull out the ring he had been carrying with him all trip. Katie of course said yes!
Katie and John chose Greenwood Garden because they both love Peaks Island and the venue itself. John used to bartend weddings as a side gig, and he always had a fondness for Greenwood Garden. So, it was top of mind when it came time to find a location in the broader Portland area. Friends and family visited from all over, filling up the ferry on more than one occasion. It was a sight to behold, all the guests making their way along Island Avenue to the Lions Club.
The ceremony itself was lovely and heartfelt. Katie stood with her brother, Alex, and John stood with his best friend, Chas, who is like a brother. There, with Portland off in the distance across the water, Katie and John said their vows and sealed the deal with a kiss.
The rest of the day was filled with good food and company, and lots of dancing. The Family Jones Band put on a great show with a special guest appearance by Katie, who did an admirable rendition of “Baby One More Time”. We had a great time photographing this amazing couple, and we wish them much happiness. Below are some of our favorite pictures from throughout their wedding. Take a look!
